Make July count & finish hiring before summer

Clients this week have told me their workload is:

“Really full on”

“Insane. Just insane”

“Bonkers right now”

Usually accompanied by a manic laugh.

We laugh manically together.

Because I get it.

I’m going hell for leather for the next 3 weeks.

Then over the summer I’ll hang out with my mini-me.

It’ll be glorious.

Until sometime on day 3. I’ll be “Just. Put. Your. Shoes. On”. She’ll be “Mummy…please…try to be patient…”

Right now, I’m back-to-back writing ads, screening apps, calling, emailing, zooming…

And I’m dreaming of summer.

It’s so close…

But how do we build a strong perm team in the next 3 weeks?

In 16 years of education recruitment, I’ve learnt how to squeeze the most out of July and complete the perm hiring.

With just weeks left to go, we need every day to move us closer to a full, permanent team.

And avoid temp staff at all costs.

The key is a strict timeline with set rules:

  1. Book interview dates in with the relevant staff now.

  2. Don’t have a closing date on your ad. State on the ad:  We reserve the right to close this vacancy early if we receive sufficient applications for the role.

  3. Check applications daily and invite candidates as soon as you have 6 good people for an assessment day. Less if it’s a niche role or you get a stellar applicant and don’t want to risk losing them.

  4. Shortlist within one school day.

  5. 5 is the magic number of days between shortlist and interview.  Enough time for candidates to take time off and prep, not so long that you risk losing people unnecessarily.

  6. On the interview day, make the offer.  Email the offer letter with onboarding instructions.

I’ve used these rules for 4 years and I love that they stop me overthinking.

By nature, I’m a reflector but my mantra for July is “less thought, more ACTION!”

Mulling things over can lead to self-doubt.  And worry that it’s too late. Even stress.

Instead, choose to take control, trust the process and make it happen.

If you fill your key roles in the next few weeks, it’ll set you up for next year.

You’ll start the year strong.

Instead of making do by piecing together the remnants of 23/24.

For the next 3 weeks…

May your coffee be strong

Your applicants stronger.

And your vacancies filled first time.

So, your summer can be truly relaxing.
