Time to shake things up: when habit holds you back

Pre-kids we were on mini breaks all the time.

But impromptu house parties, festivals, and mid-week gigs have been replaced by kids’ parties, trips to B&Q, and a couple of hurried glasses of wine every 6 months.

There have been moments when I’ve thought “is this all there is?”

During one of those moments a WhatsApp popped up from Chaw (my friend since Y5) with “Crazy idea. How about we go to Barcelona for the night?”.

Booking the flights and hotel was easy enough.

Organising kids’ homework, placating them with “I’ll bring you something back…”, getting OH’s on board was more challenging.

As well as glimpsing next week’s tiredness, messy house, and piles of dirty washing.

But ¡Madre mía! was it worth it!

We only had 27 hours in Barcelona, but we made a point to enjoy every minute - from lunchtime tapas and wine to a kid-free wander around T2 departures.

But the best part was a break from the norm, I felt energised just by doing something different.

Now you probably haven’t flown to another country just to escape your adult responsibilities for a day, but maybe you feel like you’re doing the same safe things out of habit.

Even though they’re no longer serving you.

So, next time you suggest a new approach and a member of the team says, 'That’s how we’ve always done it,' it’s a nudge to shake things up.

Because sometimes, the biggest barrier to progress is habit.
